Refrigerator Organization 101

Extra minutes in the morning are precious, grab a few back by organizing your fridge with these EASY tips and achieve refrigerator bliss in your own kitchen. My friend Macki has two kids and one more on the way. Mornings are nuts in her house. We spent a few hours and less than 0 to organize her refrigerator and hopefully make mornings a little bit easier. Do you have any hot fridge-organizing tips that help keep your mornings cool?

Oh. My. Goodness!! I so needed to see this! With four kids our mornings (and let’s be honest, afternoons and evenings) are INSANE. Organizing my fridge like this would be amazing. What brand are the clear containers you use here? I like the way the lids snap on better than my current tupperware.

Thanks for such a great video

Agreed — great containers. Do you write directly on them with dry erase markers, or do you have special labels?

I thought milk/dairy shouldn’t be stored in the door b/c it isn’t the same temp and heats up when the door is open? And veggies go bad a lot faster cut up and in bags, at least in my fridge. It sure does look nice though!

Milk shouldn’t be kept in the door of the fridge, its not cold enough there. And veggies go bad much faster if washed and cut. But otherwise it looks nice!

I’ve found that using clear containers (love my Lock&Lock!) and grouping like items works extremely well. Very rarely do we get “science experiments” lurking in the fridge because we can see what’s in each container very easily. I don’t put my milk in the door, I keep that on the top shelf and at the back. The door is the warmest part of your fridge so I keep only my sauces and jams and spreads there. I try and keep single serve yogurts and sliced breads in the bottom drawer of my fridge. Leftovers for lunches go in the smaller drawer (so DH knows where to look and doesn’t poach my leftovers for lunch!) and the other shelves are designated for different foods. I grabbed a clear handled basket from our local container shop and coralled my coffee making supplies/DH’s beers in there. Holy snotballs, does THAT solve some space issues! I’ll be posting my fridge set up in a bit on my blog Random Musings (thedaviesdealings.blogspot.com).

My mother in law uses a dry erase pen just on the container itself. It washes off pretty easily. Check your local office supply store or kitchen supply store for the dry erase labels. I’d check to see if the labels are dishwasher safe or just forgo them all together. I prefer the dry erase right on the lid method myself.

In my fridge, stuff for breakfast goes together on a shelf, stuff for lunch goes together on a shelf, a separate shelf (usually the small one) for defrosting meats and things.

My recommendation for a functional, clear collection of storage ware with snap lids is the SnapWare brand. They’re made in the U.S. and they’re amazing quality – I’ve had mine for 5+ years and they’ve survived too many dishwasher shouldn’t-have-happened affairs to count. I got mine at Costco, so ask someone you know to pick up a box. $25 for a 42-piece set.

this looks great the only thing i would change would be no plastic containers unless eco-friendly instead use glass containers. the cut up veggies in BPA plastic bags/or clear cloth reusable bags only and no milk. thanks
